80% of Union Presbyterian Seminary students receive financial aid.

Admissions application deadline is March 1.

Balancing the call from God with the realities of financial responsibility is no easy task. It may seem daunting, but you are not alone! For two centuries seminarians at Union Presbyterian Seminary have balanced these two realities of theological education with the help of the Financial Aid staff.

SCHOLARSHIPS & INSTITUTIONAL AID

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

Union Presbyterian Seminary offers a number of scholarship opportunities for outstanding students in the M.Div., M.A.C.E., and Dual Degree programs. These awards are made to students who show genuine promise for exceptional leadership in the life of the church, demonstrated by excellent academic achievement and participation in the common life of their churches and/or communities. Scholarships begin at 100% of tuition and may include an additional grant. Awards are made based on the application for admission which must be received by March 1. No additional application is required.

PROMISE FOR PARISH MINISTRY SCHOLARSHIPS

These awards are made to residential degree-seeking students who show genuine promise for leadership in the life of the church, demonstrated by their participation in the common life of their churches and communities, and academic readiness for graduate study. Scholarships begin at 100% of tuition and may include an additional grant. Awards are made based on the application for admission which must be received by March 1. No additional application is required.

Students who did not receive a scholarship at admission, and who have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA during their study at UPSem, may apply in the spring for a scholarship for the next academic year. Applications will be available from the financial aid office in February. A faculty committee reviews these applications for academic merit and community participation. Awards will only be made if there are available funds in the budget.

MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM

Students attending our Charlotte campus are invited to participate in the Matching Grant program, which is available to degree-seeking students. The Matching Grant Program (applicable to six credit hours per term, up to three terms per academic year) involves the student, the student’s church, and the seminary, with each party providing one-third of the student’s tuition.

Students whose churches are not able to participate in the Matching Grant program may apply for need-based aid. An additional application, which is available on Blackboard, is required. Eligible students may be awarded up to two-thirds of tuition in need-based grants.

BLENDED LEARNING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

All newly admitted BLP students have the opportunity to receive a scholarship award equal to 1/3 of their tuition. Awards are made based on the application for admission. No additional application is required.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TH.M. STUDENTS

Union Presbyterian Seminary is pleased to offer scholarships equal to full tuition for students in the Master of Theology program. To be eligible, applications for the program must be complete by March 1.

NEED-BASED

Student Eligibility and Application Process

The deadline to apply for need-based grants on the Richmond campus is June 1. On the Charlotte campus, the deadline is August 1.
Need-based grants are available to qualified students in the M.Div., M.A.C.E., M.A.T.S., and D.Min. programs who apply by the due date.

Recipients must be full-time students and making satisfactory progress in their degree program. Eligible students must submit the Union Presbyterian Seminary Application for Need-Based Financial Aid. Need-based grant recipients must re-apply and re-qualify each year. Prospective students who were not awarded a scholarship may also submit the need-based aid application. Other Sources of Funding

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) STUDY GRANTS

Students who are members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) may be eligible to apply for grants from the denomination through the PC(USA) Office of Financial Aid for Studies. A student in the M.Div. program must be enrolled as an Inquirer or Candidate. The application period opens in April and ends in June. All applicants must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for this grant. Students may register for notification of the application period with the PC(USA) Office of Financial Aid for Studies.


FEDERAL LOAN PROGRAM

Union Presbyterian Seminary also participates in the Federal Loan Program. While loans should be viewed as a last resort to financing a theological education, some students find them necessary to meet expenses. Approximately 20% of our students borrow from this program each year. For graduate students, the maximum unsubsidized loan is $20,500 per year. Although loan eligibility is based on cost of attendance less expected family contribution, a student cannot borrow in excess of $20,500.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as the first step in applying for a loan.  Students should make sure that they complete the FAFSA that relates to the academic year for which they are seeking a loan and key in the Union Presbyterian Seminary school code of G03743.
