Debbie Johnson (M.Div.’05) is now serving as Interim Pastor at Faith United Church in Oswego, NY.  Faith Church is a result of the merge of the UCC church and PCUSA church in Oswego.

Sarah Montgomery (M.Div.’15) has been installed as associate pastor at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church.



Lew Lancaster (B.D.’51) died the week of February 12, 2018.

Samuel Hope (B.D.’56) died on February 7, 2018.

James Atwood (M.Div.’59) has been named the recipient of the 2018 David Steele Distinguished Writer Award by the Presbyterian Writers Guild.

Laura Kelly (M.Div.’16) was ordained as minister of word and sacrament by the Presbytery of the James at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA on December 10, 2017.

Heather Jones Butler (M.Div.’17) was ordained as teaching elder/minister of word and sacrament by the Presbytery of Shepherds and Lapsley on January 14, 2018.

Andrew Whitehead (M.Div.’17) was ordained as minister of word and sacrament by the Presbytery of the James on January 14, 2018.


David Dickerson (D.Min.’85) will be the new pastor at Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Fincastle, VA.

Cheryl Duke (D.Min.’86) is the new pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Dade City, FL.

Doris Chandler (D.Min.’08) is the new pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Philipstown, NY.

David Jones (M.Div.’08) was installed as the pastor at Newnan Presbyterian Church in Newnan, SC.

Jenny McDevitt (M.Div.’09) has accepted a call at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City as their new senior pastor and head of staff.

Kelly Lindsay (M.Div. ’16) has accepted a call to serve in a dual ministry in New Hope Presbytery. She will serve as pastor for the Falkland (NC) Presbyterian Church, and as campus minister for UKirk Campus Ministry for East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and for Pitt Community College, in Winterville.

Scott Biggers (M.Div.’17) is serving as the pastor of Boykins Baptist Church in Boykins, VA.


William White (Life Trustee) died in January, 2018.

Cecil Culverhouse (M.Div.’47, Th.M.’48) died on January 7, 2018

Jo Anne Chambliss (M.A.’52) died on December 31, 2017.

Frank Mansell, Jr. (Th.M.’67) died on December 22, 2017.

W. Guy Delaney (D.Min.’77) died on November 17, 2017.

Charlotte Frist Faucette Chesnutt (PSCE) died on December 5, 2017.

Tom Tate (D.Min.’78) married Susan Supernaw on February 26, 2017. He will be retiring from Plaza Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC in May 2018.

Emily Hook (M.Div.’17) was ordained as teaching elder by the Presbytery of the Grand Canyon on December 17, 2017.


Michael Vaughn (D.Min. ’77) will be retiring from Community Presbyterian in San Juan Capistrano, CA on December 31.

Robert Alwood (D.Min.’78) was honorably retired on August 31, 2016 from Tampa Bay Presbytery.

David Howell (M.Div, ’81) retired from his position as associate director of preaching resources from Luther Seminary in St Paul, MN.

Greg Albert (M.Div.’90) was honorably retired from the Presbytery of New Brunswick on August 31, 2017.

John (Sung Eun) Lee (M.A.C.E.’01) is serving as the education pastor at the Shin Kwang Church of New York in Bayside, NY, since 2016. He previously served as program coordinator of Korean Doctor of Ministry Program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.

Chris Adams (M.Div.’05) has completed his ministry at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN.

Kathleen Henrion (M.Div.’11) is now serving as supply pastor for Boeuff Presbyterian Church in Gerald, MO.


Julius Melton (B.D.’58; Th.M.’59) died on November 20, 2017.

D. Michael Meloy (M.Div.’73) died on February 26, 2017.

William R. McGary (D.Min.’89) died on September 8, 2017. He was pastor of the Wampum Pres Church in Wampum, PA since 1979.

Mary Elizabeth Jonas (P.S.C.E.) died on November 20, 2017.

L. Shannon Jung (B.D.’68) has published his book Building the Good Life For All, Transforming Income Inequality in Our Communities. From the summary of the book: The well-being of those who are financially secure depends on the well-being of those who are not, those who fall into the working poor, or Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed (ALICE). We are interdependent both materially and spiritually and are diminished by the extent to which we do not flourish together. The book is available on Amazon.

Paul Lewis (Th.M.;86) published his book, Wisdom Calls: The Moral Story of the Hebrew Bible through Nurturing Faith. From the summary, “…It is not a standard introduction to the Old Testament. This book should be treated instead as a thought experiment that investigates the question, ‘What does the Old Testament teach us about moral development?'” The book can be found on Amazon.

Over 100 Union Seminary alums gathered in Montreat, North Carolina for the Union Family Reunion on October 23-25. Below is the photo taken on Tuesday, October 24th.

Maynard Fountain (M.Div.’50) died on November 1, 2017.

Margaret Buford (M.C.E.’59) died on October 13, 2017.

Michael Bush (M.Div.’90) died on October 23, 2017.

Julie Mader Hostetter (D.Min.’10) died on November 12, 2017.

Robert Montgomery (UTS ’61-’62) has published his book, Following the Human One: The Way to Fulfillment and Flourishing. Jesus Christ is the most famous person in human history. His favorite name for himself was “the Son of Man” or the “the Human One.” Rarely did his followers call him that, but it must have had great significance for him. This book describes why this name was so important and what it means for us now. It is available on the Wipf and Stock website

James Davis (M.Div.’95) has published his fourth book, Forbearance: A Theological Ethic for a Disagreeable Church. The book explores what it might mean for the church to engage the difference and disagreement we host not as an unfortunate problem, but as an opportunity to practice Christian character, in hopes of modeling for the broader culture a healthier way of living as community. Elizabeth Eason Nix (M.Div.’17) is serving as director of christian education at Johns Island Presbyterian Church in Johns Island, SC.

Richard Lyon Morgan (M.Div.‘53. Th.M.’56, Ph.D.’66) and his brother have published a book on their family member, Congressman Matthew Lyon of Vermont. The book, entitled Resist Tyranny: Matthew Lyon Defender of Liberty, tells of Lyon’s advocacy for free speech and freedom of the press when those freedoms were being denied by then President John Adams.  It is available through Amazon.
